“The Societalization of Horizontal Accountability: rights advocacy and the Defensoria del Pueblo in Argentina” in Ryan Goodman y Thomas Pegram (Eds.) National Human Rights, State Compliance, and Social Change: Assessing National Human Rights Institutions

Enrique Peruzzoti

Publisher: Cambridge University Press

2011

The new agenda of institutional reform has taken hold in Argentina, one that demands the strengthening of agencies of accountability over state authorities. It gave rise to a new breed of civic politics engaged in government accountability. In this article, Peruzzoti discusses how horizontal and vertical social accountabilty mechanisms are interrelated in the case of Argentina. The author concludes that the experience of Argentina with horizontal accountability described in this chapter is an addition to the existing repertoire of accountability politics in the region. It is yet another attempt to find ways to strengthen the accountability of state actors and agencies that are still unaccustomed to this vital democratic exercise.
